Maldini is on his way back for the Azzurri...

Milan legend Paolo Maldini's sabbatical from football will end later today when he is expected to accept an offer from the FIGC to become a director and ambassador for the Italy national team.

Sky Sport 24 are reporting Maldini has been approached by the Italian FA and offered a director's role. He will also become an ambassador for Italy's bid to host the Euro 2016 tournament and is expected to be present at UEFA headquarters on May 28.

Maldini played 126 times for la Nazionale, and his return, though not confirmed officially yet, will be seen as a welcome one.

It is said the former stopper will accept the offer and an official announcement is expected by the end of the day.

Previous reports suggested Milan were set to give him an office role at the club, but it seems as if the Italian FA have won the race.
