Milan legend Paolo Maldini believes Real Madrid are lacking a new Zinedine Zidane.

Paolo Maldini believes Real Madrid's lack of a Zinedine Zidane-style orchestrator could cost them against Milan when the two sides meet in the Champions League on Tuesday.

"Zidane was a delight, but he left for Spain. This is what Real Madrid are missing, a Zidane," he told AS.

But, asked who was the greatest player he had played against, Maldini chose Diego Maradona.

"Maradona was the greatest," he added. "And then Ronaldo in his first year in Italy [for Inter]."

Interest in players from both clubs has always been reciprocal in the urgencies of transfer markets past and present.

And Florentino Perez used whatever means he had at his disposal to sign Maldini eight years ago - but it didn't work.

"Once, in 2002, we played in a knockout round and Florentino said that he wanted me at Madrid," Maldini said.

"Then we won the Champions League and it was impossible."
